Zul Noordin now insists he is a PAS member

KUALA LUMPUR, July 6 — In a bizarre revelation today, independent MP Zulkifli Noordin claimed he is still a PAS member despite having been sacked from PKR earlier this year for breaking party discipline.

“I have neither left the party nor retracted my membership,” said the lawyer who stood on the PKR ticket for the Kulim-Bandar Baharu seat which he won in Election 2008.

He added that PAS should at least provide him with an official notification letter to indicate that his membership had been revoked.

“I have not received any official notification from the party either,” he told The Malaysian Insider in Parliament today.

“You cannot just remove a person as a member however. You have to give him a fair hearing. Especially based on the principles of PAS being an Islamic party,” said Zulkifli (picture), who has joined four other ex-PKR MPs in a new parliamentary grouping called Konsensus Bebas.

He laughed when asked if he ever plans to check the status of his membership with the party.

“Why should I? The onus is on them to check my status. Why should I need to? Perhaps they have revoked my membership but they never informed me and they never gave me a hearing,” he said, adding that he has been a member of PAS since 1997.

Since his sacking, PAS leaders have said that the party would not accept Zulkifli into its ranks and would respect its Pakatan Rakyat coalition partner’s decision to sack him.

Zulkifli, who was sacked in March, made the proclamation on his PAS membership when he defended the Islamist party during a press conference in Parliament today.

When commenting on PAS’s alleged involvement together with PKR in harbouring both private investigator P. Balasubramaniam and controversial blogger Raja Petra Kamarudin, Zulkifli claimed that there were a few “Anwarinas” in the Islamist party.

“I would not go to that level to speak about PAS. I am a PAS member. But it looks like PAS is not taking any action in this matter.

“There is this group of people whom we call the Anwarinas. They are Anwar’s supporters. They worship him. They play the role of destroying PAS,” he alleged.

Zulkifli said these detractors did not regard PAS president Datuk Seri Abdul Hadi Awang as their president but revered (PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri) Anwar Ibrahim as their chief. Coincidentally, Zulkifli represented Anwar in his first sodomy trial in 1998 but left his client this year after he was sacked from PKR.

He called on the PAS leadership to take action against these “Anwarinas”.

“Return the confidence to the Muslims. PAS is a good party. They fight for Islamic principles and they have not strayed from their path,” he said.

He added that PAS had continued to remain strong but the “Anwarinas” were attempting to destroy the party.
